Asthma attacks can be very serious and even fatal. If you recognise yourself in one or more of the following situations, you may have an increased risk of severe attacks
- Your asthma symptoms are not under control
- You use more than one canister of SABA in a month
- You do not take inhaled corticosteroid-contained medicine or you are not taking them according to the prescribed schedule
- You have a history of near-fatal asthma that required intubation and mechanical ventilation
- During the past year, you went to the emergency care unit for asthma
- You have other medical conditions such as obesity, chronic rhinosinusitis, oesophageal reflux, food allergy
- You smoke or are exposed to second-hand smoking, including e-cigarettes
- You have mental health issues
Ask your healthcare provider about your level of risk. You may be at risk even if you experience only a few symptoms.
With the right treatment and lifestyle you can control your symptoms and avoid the risk of a serious attack.
