Am I at risk of severe asthma attacks?

Asthma attacks can be very serious and even fatal. If you recognise yourself in one or more of the following situations, you may have an increased risk of severe attacks

  • Your asthma symptoms are not under control
  • You use more than one canister of SABA in a month
  • You do not take inhaled corticosteroid-contained medicine or you are not taking them according to the prescribed schedule
  • You have a history of near-fatal asthma that required intubation and mechanical ventilation
  • During the past year, you went to the emergency care unit for asthma
  • You have other medical conditions such as obesity, chronic rhinosinusitis, oesophageal reflux, food allergy
  • You smoke or are exposed to second-hand smoking, including e-cigarettes
  • You have mental health issues

Ask your healthcare provider about your level of risk. You may be at risk even if you experience only a few symptoms.

With the right treatment and lifestyle you can control your symptoms and avoid the risk of a serious attack.
